I hope you will enjoy learning about your parents, us, and of course all sorts of other stuff. We want this to be fun to read and trust me there will be some fun moments on this one. We plan to have give-aways and other fun things to do. So here goes the very first post. ~
OK, we are aware that you are all starting school soon or you are already in school. Some of you attend school at home; but you will still have moments of being nervous when you start a new adventure.
For some reason the first day of school is sometimes frightening. You feel nervous about meeting you teacher or teachers for the first time. You may be going into a new school this year; like going from elementary school grade 5 to Middle school, grade 6. Or you maybe starting in elementary school or high school. Also, you might be attending a brand new school where you have to make new friends. Remember that all of your friends feel the very same way. There are a variety of reasons you may feel nervous and it would be unusual if you were not.
Grandpa and Grandma
Here's a few of our memories about school ~ I interviewed Grandpa and asked him to tell me some of his feelings about going to school.
Grandpa actually went to school with the very same kids clear through High School. He went to Jackson Elementary, Jackson Jr. High and then West High School. He said he didn't like girls until he was twelve and he really didn't like aggressive girls. He said that in Elementary school he didn't like being chased around on the school grounds by girls.
Grandma went to school with the same kids up and until 8th grade. I attended Richfield Elementary School until 6th grade. They took the class I was assigned and put us in the Junior High which was 7th through 8th grade. I was very upset about that and worried; but in the end I think my class all became better friends because we were the only 6th grade class there. Then my parents moved to Salt Lake and I started 8th grade in a new school; Northwest Jr. High. I was so nervous about going to school there that I lost about 20 lbs while we were in the process of moving. The very first day was hard but I did make friends.
Here are a few memories of Elementary School from us both.
Grandma:
When I was in elementary school I loved recess. We did chase the boys around and they would chase the girls and try to kiss us. There was an old saying; George Porgie puddin pie; kissed the girls and made them cry. My first boyfriends name in 7th grade was named George. I loved playing on what we called the jungle Jim.
When I was in 3rd grade my mother took me into the school and we went down the hall to look on the door of the 3rd grade classrooms to see what teacher we had. In those days we didn't have computers so we didn't know ahead of time what class we were in. When I looked on the door where my name was; I went very pale. I had heard that this teacher was really mean and I didn't want to even go into the class. My mother told me I had to stay and see what the teacher was like for myself. She stood at the door for a while and until I settled down. One day she brought baby kitten's to class and let us pet them. she was always kind to me. She became one of my favorite teachers.
Grandpa had a scarier story. He said there were some teachers who had the reputation of smacking your hands with a ruler if you did anything wrong. One teacher had the students put their hands out on the desk. She would check their hands and nails to see if they were clean. If she saw dirt under the nails you would get your hands smacked and then you were sent to the restroom to clean your hands and nails.
He said that the Principles Office had a case of yardsticks that were kept in a box next to the secretary's desk. If you were caught doing anything wrong like cheating, stealing, rude in class, swearing, disrespectful to teachers and other various school crimes you were sent to the office and the Principal would have you lean over and grab your ankles and then he would use the yardstick and break it over your butt. You had to take the broken stick back to class. I am sure this cut down on bad behavior.
I must say you are all so blessed that you don't have to worry about this happening to you because now days you can't use any physical discipline.
The main thing to remember about that first day of school is that everyone is nervous and concerned about that first day. You can be sure of that.
Challenge:
Ask your parents to tell you about their memories of going to school for the first day. - I think you will find that they felt the very same way you are feeling.
Love and hugs,
Grandpa and Grandma
P.S.Have your parents show you how to write a comment. Remember you can ask Grandpa and Grandma questions and you can also tell us how the first day of school went for you.
